To get straight in with the solution to this problem, try Robertshaw’s pithy, fact-driven, illuminating, frankly excellent summary “Somme " in the Battle Story series. Try Philpott’s “Bloody Victory” which explains the politics behind the battle and that it was actually a FRENCH operation, the British being the minor partner/5(7).

This is an excellent book covering the Battle of Somme in The one drawback, as with all of Macdonald's work, is that the book only deals with the role of the UK and Commonwealth countries in the Battle. The book is very readable, with excellent maps, and a good description of the horrors of the battle(s)/5.
